The Art of Editing and Mentoring Junior Colleagues

(A group workshop for mid-level and senior lawyers)

The Art of Editing and Mentoring Junior Colleagues is a two-and-a-half hour workshop for mid-level and senior lawyers, presented by Marie Buckley. This workshop focuses on techniques for editing and mentoring junior colleagues. We will discuss techniques for presenting assignments effectively to ensure that junior colleagues return turnkey products and for delivering comments constructively to create a motivated team.

During the second hour, we will edit a legal memorandum from a junior colleague. In this exercise, instructor Marie Buckley illustrates techniques for working with disorganized material, “finding the gold,” restructuring paragraphs to “lead from the top” and rewriting cluttered sentences in plain English. This editing exercise focuses on revealing the purpose and structure of the paper—and on using an editing session to cement a mentoring relationship with junior attorneys.

The presentation concludes with a question and answer session.
